Testimonials

Within minutes of starting, James quietly enthralled 29 young people and set their imaginations going as they created their Dad as a super hero.
As well as Football, Fishing and Tennis Man, we had Tickle, Snoring Sushi, Bilda, Ukulele, Art Man and the Math Freak! The extra numbers and advice requests didn't faze him and he had them cleaning up and ready to leave on time!! Highly recommend.

-Melissa Payne, Cambridge Library

Thanks again for the cartooning workshops - they went really well and the kids loved them!
We got really good feedback from the kids who attended and they were all keen to have longer and more sessions. I think they had a lot of fun, thanks!

-Amanda Heptinstall, Branch Librarian, Amherst Village Library

James spoke in a confident and interesting manner at the children's level and kept them engaged with samples of his work, photos and an example of the graphic process he uses for drawing cartoons.
It was great to see James interact with the kids and he asked them to create their own cartoon about their dream job. Whilst they were busy thinking and drawing, he was busy creating a cartoon of his dream job- coming to Narrogin Regional Library to teach the kids about drawing cartoons!
Comments from staff who attended the session:
'James Foley- fantastic. Spoke at kids level. Had them highly entertained. They learnt a lot about illustration. Very enjoyable!'
'Great! Very skilled artist. Amazing to watch'
Comment from a student:
'This was fun because when you read a book you don't realize how much work goes into drawing the pictures'
All the students thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt a lot about illustrating books.

-Rachel Howe, Narrogin Regional Library

James Foley ran a series of cartooning workshops at Swan City Youth Service as part of a Crime Prevention Grant we received from SGIO. The project was aimed at engaging young people in something of interest to them in order to help alleviate some of their antisocial behaviours and ran for a period of 16 weeks.

Swan City Youth Service works with young people aged 12-25 years, who are 'high risk' clients, have come from abusive backgrounds, extremely dysfunctional families, have either been involved in, or are currently involved in the justice system whether it be going to court or attending community service, and have histories of drug and alcohol abuse within their families creating many issues for the young people themselves.

It is a constant struggle to find facilitators that are able to engage and work with this target group but it was something that James achieved with ease, his quiet yet persistent personality knew exactly when to challenge the young people and when not to. He would mingle and play a game of pool with the guys to encourage them to participate and spent time getting to know them; he valued them as people with respect and met them at their level. James is a fantastic cartoonist but his ability to engage and relate with these young people is definitely a rare skill to find in such a great artist.

The young people loved the cartooning program and one young person James worked with in particular who had little or no confidence in himself and his drawings just shone by the time the exhibition came. We would definitely highly recommend James for any cartooning workshops with young people.

-Chrystie Flint, Swan City Youth Service Midland
