Quokka, 2003 - 2010

My main body of work to date has been cartoon illustrations of a small Western Australian marsupial. I drew close to 300 cover illustrations for the Quokka newspaper from June 2003 to August 2010.

The newspaper is available all over the state of Western Australia- it was very strange to be drawing the cover in my little room one week, and then to see my work on a newstand in a far-away location like Albany, or Kalgoorlie, or Carnarvon the next week.

For those of you who've never seen quokkas, they're little guys that live on Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Fremantle. My quokkas look nothing like real quokkas. I don't know why- they just kind of evolved.

People often asked if I would run out of ideas. I have to be honest here and point out that the good people at Quokka Press usually came up with the topic for each week, so all I had to do was come up with a situation that fit. Sometimes the idea came easily, and sometimes not- but it definitely got easier over time.

Here's a selection of my favourite covers.

If you'd like to see a timelapse of me drawing a cover, check out this post on my blog.
